A Vice City over a decade in the making. A survival horror franchise that sold 5 million copies in five days. James Bond returning to gaming after nearly 14 years of silence. A wuxia epic choreographed by real martial artists. An extraction shooter from the studio that built Halo. And somehow, that’s still just a fraction of the list. Welcome to 2026; the year your backlog became a crisis.
Why 2026 Is Different
A Vice City rebuilt over more than a decade of development; and 13 years after its predecessor. A survival horror franchise that has already sold 6 million units in under 3 weeks (after selling 5 million in its first five days). James Bond returning to gaming after 14 years of silence. A wuxia epic that will be choreographed by real martial artists. An extraction shooter from Halo’s creators. And that is still just a small part of the picture.
In simple terms, 2026 will be the year that AAA games will finally stop playing it safe. Not due to a single massive game; though one game will likely break every entertainment record; but due to an entire generation of developers working for the last 5 years on games they did not want to rush. The result will be a calendar filled with AAA releases that will create such a backlog, you will need a second backlog just to manage the first.
This is not a collection of TBA titles. All of the games listed below have been confirmed for a 2026 release by either their developers or publishers, although some have firmer release windows than others, and we will identify which are confirmed and which are at risk of slipping.
Wherever possible, we have included critical reception and sales figures for games that have already been released. Where there are legitimate reasons for doubt, we will say so clearly.
Now let’s get into it:
1. Grand Theft Auto VI; Release Date, Platforms, and the Weight of Expectation

Developer: Rockstar Games | Publisher: Rockstar Games | Release Date: November 19, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S
It is impossible to discuss 2026 in gaming without referencing Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is not simply the most anticipated title of 2026, but may be the most anticipated entertainment product of the decade.
After multiple delays, Rockstar Games finally provided a November 19, 2026 release date. The game was initially slated for a late 2025 release before being delayed to May 2026, and ultimately to its current November release window. With each delay, anticipation grew. The timeline of delays has been covered extensively by news outlets including the BBC and Variety, with the final release window announced on November 6, 2025, via Rockstar’s official Newswire.
Rockstar Games, official delay statement, May 2, 2025:
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team.” — Variety, May 2, 2025
A warning on this front: a January 2026 report by Bloomberg‘sJason Schreier indicated that GTA VI may not yet be content-complete and that Rockstar could not provide an absolute guarantee that the game would be ready for the November release. As of today, however, November 19, 2026 remains the officially stated release window, but given GTA VI’s history of delays, cautious optimism is warranted.
Strauss Zelnick (CEO, Take-Two Interactive), interview with The Game Business, November 6, 2025:
“When we set a date, we really do believe in it.” — The Game Business, Nov 6, 2025 (via IGN, Nov 7, 2025).
On December 5, 2023, the first trailer for GTA VI was officially released (the trailer leaked on December 4, one day ahead of schedule), confirming that the game takes place in a modern-day Vice City and introducing dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, marking the first time in the series that a male and female co-lead structure has been used. The technological leap from GTA V to GTA VI is immense when viewed in the context of the 13 years and two full console generations that have passed since GTA V launched on September 17, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Dan Houser (co-founder, Rockstar Games), speaking at LA Comic Con, September 27, 2025:
“It’s not going to be a story that I wrote or a character set that I developed. I think it’s going to be exciting. The game will be great, I’m sure.” — IGN exclusive interview, Sep 29, 2025
Strauss Zelnick (CEO, Take-Two Interactive), investor note, May 2, 2025:
“We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.” — Take-Two Interactive press release, May 2, 2025 (via IGN).
Additionally, GTA V’s commercial success provides an almost insurmountable benchmark. According to Take-Two Interactive’s Q3 FY2026 earnings report in February 2026, Grand Theft Auto V has sold 225 million copies worldwide, positioning it as the second-best-selling video game of all time behind Minecraft and one of the most commercially successful entertainment products in history with approximately $10 billion in total franchise revenue since GTA V’s launch (including Grand Theft Auto Online).
GTA VI will not merely sell millions of copies. It will reset console ecosystems, redefine online gaming economies, and serve as the cultural reference point for this generation that GTA V served for the previous.
Every other publisher on this list has planned their release schedule around GTA VI for exactly this reason.
2. Resident Evil: Requiem; Capcom’s Horror Winning Streak Delivers Again

Developer & Publisher: Capcom | Released: February 27, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Steam & Epic Games Store)
Resident Evil: Requiem has already launched, and the results are speaking for themselves.
The ninth mainline title in the Resident Evil franchise was released on February 27, 2026, and within five days, Resident Evil: Requiem had sold five million copies worldwide. By mid-March, this number would climb above six million copies sold worldwide. This is the fastest-selling entry in the franchise’s thirty-year history as reported by both Capcom and media outlets such as IGN, Eurogamer, and VGC.
The hybrid perspective system in Resident Evil: Requiem allows players to switch seamlessly between first-person and third-person views throughout gameplay. Unlike many other hybrid games, Resident Evil: Requiem does not require players to navigate a menu to switch between the two views. When playing as new protagonist Grace Ashcroft in first person, the survival horror element of the game is greatly enhanced. Switching to third-person view increases the spatial awareness of the player allowing for greater mobility and a more action-oriented experience. Previews of the game from Summer Game Fest2025 described this as a deliberate design choice rather than an arbitrary feature. Capcom designed perspective-specific animations; i.e., when playing in third-person, Grace will stumble and trip during high-risk encounters, a mechanic that does not exist in first-person view, resulting in a completely different emotional experience based on how the player chooses to play.
Capcom’s proprietary technology, the RE Engine, has consistently impressed critics and developers alike. Additionally, Capcom’s recent run of quality — beginning with Resident Evil 7 in 2017, followed by the RE2 and RE4 remakes, Resident Evil Village, and now Requiem — represents arguably the most consistent streak of quality in modern AAA development.
However, there is valid criticism of Requiem. Many reviewers have pointed out that the latter portion of the game becomes overly reliant on action set pieces at the expense of the horror elements that define the opening hours of the game. Therefore, if you are a purist that enjoys the slow build-up of fear from the earlier Resident Evil titles, your experience may vary significantly in the latter portions of the game.
3. Crimson Desert; Pearl Abyss Steps Out of the MMO Shadow

Developer: Pearl Abyss | Release Date: March 19, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam & Epic Games Store), macOS
Pearl Abyss has confirmed that Crimson Deserthas reached gold. Gold indicates that the game is complete, pressed, and shipping. Crimson Desert began life as a spin-off within the Black Desert MMO universe before Pearl Abyss shifted direction entirely, so reaching gold as a fully standalone title is a major accomplishment. During development, Pearl Abyss shifted direction away from the MMO roots and instead built a fully standalone single-player action RPG with a focus on real-time physics-based combat, large-scale battles, and weather effects that influence gameplay.
Hands-on previews of Crimson Desert from Gamescom2024 and Tokyo Game Show described a game that possesses the narrative ambitions of The Witcher 3 and the mechanical complexity of Elden Ring. These are extremely lofty comparisons, and should be approached with healthy skepticism until players can judge for themselves.
What makes Crimson Desert truly exciting is the pedigree behind the combat. If you have played Black Desert Online, you understand the combat system is generally regarded as the finest in MMO history, a claim that even the harshest critics acknowledge. Pearl Abyss has spent years refining the combat system from Black Desert Online to develop a single-player experience. If Pearl Abyss strikes a chord with western audiences as suggested by their trailers, the studio could be catapulted into the upper echelon of RPG developers practically overnight.
The practical concern: March is overcrowded. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection was released six days prior to Crimson Desert’s March 19 release date and WWE 2K26 was released the same week. If you have previously been burned by unfulfilled promises from open-world games, you will have ample opportunity to wait 48 hours for initial player feedback.
As an aside, Crimson Desert is scheduled for day one release on macOS, along with PC, PS5, and Xbox; a rare occurrence for a AAA title, and a sign that Pearl Abyss is attempting to cast as wide a net as possible.
4. Gears of War: E-Day; Xbox’s Bid to Win Back the Core

Developer: The Coalition & People Can Fly | Publisher: Xbox Game Studios | Release Window: 2026 (specific date TBA) | Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Windows); PS5 rumored but unconfirmed
Gears of War: E-Day has the burden of representing an entire platform. A significant factor in the game’s potential is that People Can Fly, the Polish studio that worked on the original Gears trilogy and led development on Gears of War: Judgment, was announced as a co-developer on January 27, 2025. Bringing back the studio responsible for the original DNA of Gears means the game should have the feel of classic Gears of War. The newer entries in the Gears series have not always recaptured that same identity.
Phil Spencer (CEO, Microsoft Gaming), Paley International Council Summit, October 23, 2025:
“The creativity of the teams is, in my mind, the most important thing and the thing that we need to protect and foster.” — PC Gamer, Oct 23, 2025
Gears of War: E-Day takes place during the Locust Invasion known in the series’ lore as Emergence Day. The game follows a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they fight through a war-torn city. The game uses Unreal Engine 5 and is reportedly more condensed and focused than the wider environments in recent Gears titles.
There is also the matter of the platform. In July 2025, several resumes of developers working on Gears of War: E-Day mentioned the PS5 as a target platform. Based on Microsoft’s recent history of taking first-party titles to the PS5, it seems increasingly likely.
To be blunt, Gears of War has always been one of Xbox’s biggest brands. However, the series arguably lost some of its cultural relevance after Gears 5 in 2019. E-Day is a tonal reset; it is darker, more horror-infused, and more personal. For Xbox as a brand, and with GTA VI dominating the fall season, Gears of War: E-Day needs to land. The 2026 release window is confirmed but does not have a specific date. Some speculate that it will be released in late November 2026 to celebrate the franchise’s twentieth anniversary. Based on the packed schedule of releases, it is possible that the game slips to 2027.
5. 007 First Light; James Bond Returns to Gaming After 14 Years

Developer & Publisher: IO Interactive | Release Date: May 27, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Steam)
It has been over 14 years since there was a AAA video game featuring James Bond. The last attempt, 007 Legends in 2012, was so poorly received that many assumed the franchise’s gaming chapter was finished.
IO Interactive is now attempting to revive the franchise. The game, 007 First Light, is an original story created within a universe inspired by Ian Fleming‘s novels and short stories. This is a younger, less polished Bond. IO Interactive has said it is creating a narrative action-adventure game. While 007 First Light will retain systems from Hitman, it will not use the same design model.
The game was initially scheduled to be released March 27, 2026, but was pushed back two months to May 27, 2026. According to IO Interactive, the game needed additional polish. Game Informer ran a cover story on the game in Issue 375 (February 2026 issue, published digitally January 27, 2026). The article, written by Brian Shea, discusses how IO is crafting its version of Bond. The article describes the game as learning from Hitman’s sandbox design model but with the intention of delivering a more narrative driven experience than the previous three World of Assassination titles.
AAA spy thrillers are nearly extinct. If IO can fulfill its ambitions with 007 First Light, the result would be both a revival of the James Bond gaming franchise and potentially a resurrection of the AAA spy thriller genre. IO has demonstrated a great deal of confidence with the Hitman series. However, the studio has never developed a story-based game of this size. It has the credibility, but transitioning from Hitman’s sandbox assassination model to a character-driven narrative adventure is a very different creative task.
6. Fable; Albion Gets a Second Chance After a Very Long Wait

Developer: Playground Games (with Third Kind Games) | Publisher: Xbox Game Studios | Release Window: Autumn 2026 | Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC (Steam)
The Fable franchise has been absent from the market since Fable III in 2010. Sixteen years. That is a long time to be away, especially for a franchise built around charm, morality, and a British sense of humor that seemed destined to return at least once per console cycle.
Playground Games; yes, the Forza Horizon developer; has been working on the Fable reboot in some capacity since at least 2017-2018. On January 22, 2026, the game was previewed in a detailed gameplay demonstration alongside the simultaneous announcement that it will be released on PS5, Xbox, and PC. It will also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
That said, skepticism is warranted. Reports from inside sources in mid-2025 indicated that the game may slip to 2027. As of today, Xbox and Playground Games have maintained the Fall 2026 window. Considering the game has been in development for nearly eight years and the number of games of a similar scale that have slipped in the last two years, cautious optimism is the most logical response. The studio has never made a role-playing game. All of their previous work is comprised of open-world racing games. This is either an inspired gamble or a significant risk. We will not know until the game is in the hands of the players.
Fable is a full reboot. Not a sequel. It is a new interpretation of Albion. It features an open-world action RPG format with an emphasis on player choices. It retains the series’ trademark humor.
The fact that the game will be released on PS5 and Xbox simultaneously, close to the end of the current console cycle instead of the beginning, suggests that Microsoft views the platform wars in 2026 differently.
7. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls; Arc System Works Meets the Marvel Universe

Developer: Arc System Works | Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment | Release Date: August 6, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, PC (Steam & Epic Games Store)
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 Tag Team Fighting Game developed in Unreal Engine 5 by the developers behind Guilty Gear Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, this is a rare example of a top-tier fighting game developer, a well-known IP, and a major publisher coming together.
During Sony’sState of PlayEvent in February 2026, Sony announced a release date of August 6th 2026, along with several new additions to the X-Men roster. Sony has confirmed that there will be cross-play on the PS5 and PC versions. Pre-orders for the game began on February 19, 2026.
This is a significant moment for competitive fighting game enthusiasts. The FGC has lacked a worthy Marvel fighting game for years. A visually stunning and mechanically deep entry using Arc System Works’ signature 3D hand-drawn art style; launching at a time when the competitive scene is expanding rapidly; could become a staple of the esports scene for years to come.
A note for newcomers: As the fighting game community is aware, Arc System Works designs its games to require significant patience and a deep understanding of their systems. Therefore, we recommend spending time with the current flagship title from Arc System Works, Guilty Gear Strive, prior to the release of Marvel Tōkon. This will allow you to develop your instincts and establish a foundation to build upon when the game releases.
8. The Blood of Dawnwalker; The Witcher 3 Veterans Bet Everything on a New IP

Developer: Rebel Wolves | Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment | Release Window: 2026 (specific date TBA; Bandai Namco EU has referenced a July 2026 target) | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Founded by veterans of CD Projekt Red; including Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who directed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt; Rebel Wolves is a new independent studio. Their debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker, is an open-world dark fantasy action RPG that takes place in fourteenth century medieval Southeast Europe. Players control Coen; a man who is human by day, and a vampire by night.
In late 2024, Bandai Namco signed on as the global publisher of The Blood of Dawnwalker. In early January 2026, Rebel Wolves posted a “Launch Year Special” video announcing that the game is scheduled for release in 2026, however, no exact release date has been announced. Gameplay summaries have confirmed that the game is built in Unreal Engine 5 and will include a focus on narrative branching, day/night gameplay cycles, and player-driven consequences.
Konrad Tomaszkiewicz (founder, Rebel Wolves; former director, The Witcher 3), PC Gamer interview, January 18, 2025:
“We had crazy ideas. We knew that, you know, if we wanted to make them, we needed to open our own studio, because it would be hard to convince any big company — you know, with non-IP — to change, and do something new, and do something crazy. Actually, it’s risky, because we’re doing some solutions which are new.” — PC Gamer, Jan 18, 2025
The gaming industry often refers to a “spiritual successor,” and Dawnwalker carries the expectations of Witcher fans on its shoulders. This means that the pressure is extremely high. While delivering even 80% of what The Witcher 3 delivered in terms of story and world building would represent a huge success; anything less would mean that the “they should have stayed at CD Projekt” criticism would be inevitable. This is the core conflict of any studio formed from departing talent of a legendary team, and we do not yet know which path Rebel Wolves will take.
9. WWE 2K26; A Franchise That Clawed Its Way Back

Developer: Visual Concepts | Publisher: 2K | Released: March 13, 2026 (Standard Edition) / March 6, 2026 (Special Editions) | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Steam)
Annual sports games typically do not generate much enthusiasm. WWE 2K26 is an exception. And that is because of the context.
WWE 2K20, a title released in 2019, was so broken that wrestlers were able to walk through the ring and warp into geometric forms. WWE 2K20 was the worst-case scenario for an annual sports franchise. Visual Concepts had to rebuild trust. WWE 2K22 was a good starting point. WWE 2K23 improved upon the formula. WWE 2K24 added to the formula. WWE 2K25 finally brought the WWE 2K franchise to the Nintendo Switch 2 with a July 2025 release.
CM Punk is featured on the cover of WWE 2K26. The game includes a showcase mode that focuses on CM Punk’s career. The showcase mode will include historic matches, fantasy warfare scenarios, and “what if” timelines. Four new match types were revealed in 2K’s press release announcing WWE 2K26. The career modes in WWE 2K26 have received significant upgrades.
This is important. Pro wrestling is in a period of cultural relevance unlike anything seen in decades. WWE Rawis now onNetflix. Wrestlers such as CM Punk and Cody Rhodes are crossing over into mainstream entertainment. The increased popularity of professional wrestling in general provides an opportunity for WWE 2K26 to grow beyond its traditional fanbase.
10. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Developer & Publisher: Capcom | Released: March 13, 2026 | Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam)
Capcom has two separate Monster Hunter projects in the works. The action hunting game Wilds is the core of the Monster Hunter franchise. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is the turn-based RPG spin-off of the franchise. Both were announced alongside each other. The Stories subseries has always been the lesser-known side of the Monster Hunter franchise. The first Monster Hunter Stories game was released in 2016. The second game, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin was released in 2021 and received positive reviews.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection will be available on the four current generation platforms. This represents Capcom’s attempt to draw in the RPG audience that has shown little interest in the fast-paced action of the mainline Monster Hunter games. The early critical reaction has been positive, with GameSpot giving it a 9/10. Monster Hunter is more popular than ever due to the success of Wilds. Releasing Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection at the height of that popularity is a strategic decision.
11. Marvel’s Wolverine; Insomniac’s Darkest Chapter Yet

Developer: Insomniac Games | Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment | Release Date: September 15, 2026 | Platforms: PS5 (exclusive)
On February 24, 2026, Insomniac Games officially confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will release on September 15, 2026. Insomniac Games, which brought the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series to the PS5; is transitioning to a completely different tone for this next installment. According to early reports, including coverage from GamesRadar in September 2025; Aaron Jason Espinoza (senior community manager, Insomniac Games) said the game is “darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac”. This is the darkest, most violent, and most adult oriented game Insomniac has produced to date.
Marcus Smith (creative director, Insomniac Games), behind-the-scenes video, September 2025:
“The question that comes up a lot to us at Insomniac Games is, ‘are you going to make a Wolverine game that is as violent, as visceral, as the character in the comics?'” — GamesRadar, Sep 24, 2025
The gameplay trailer shown at the PlayStation State of Play in September 2025 provided a detailed look at the close-range melee combat Logan uses in conjunction with his regenerative abilities and adamantium claws; and how these features will be integrated into systems similar to those found in Spider-Man.
Some relevant background is worth noting. In December 2023; Insomniac Games suffered a catastrophic ransomware attack at the hands of theRhysidahacking group. The hackers leaked over 1.67 terabytes of internal data to the public; including very early builds of the Wolverine title and the company’s internal development roadmap, which extends to 2033. The attack was covered by numerous media outlets; including the BBC and Axios. Despite the attack; the company has demonstrated remarkable resilience. However; it is reasonable to question whether the company’s efforts to recover from the attack, and the resulting changes to their internal security protocols; impacted the overall scope of the finished game.
Marvel’s Wolverine is currently confirmed as exclusive to PS5 and has no announced plans for PC or Xbox. It is possible that this could be the largest new, exclusive title on any console throughout all of 2026.
12. Phantom Blade Zero; Wuxia on a AAA Stage

Developer & Publisher: S-GAME | Release Date: September 9, 2026 | Platforms: PS5 (12-month console exclusive), PC (Steam, Epic Games Store)
How many AAA titles have successfully translated the Chinese literary tradition of wandering swordsmen, supernatural combat, loyalty, and betrayal; known as wuxia; directly into a big-budget action RPG with modern production values?
At the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, Beijing-based S-GAME first unveiled Phantom Blade Zero. Since then, the game has been featured at multiple events; including Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards, where its September 9, 2026 release date was officially announced in December 2025.
As Soul; an elite assassin bound to a secret society called The Order, players will attempt to uncover why they have only sixty-six days left to live. The combat system in Phantom Blade Zero; built in Unreal Engine 5; is centered around speed: fluid aerial combinations, various weapons, and a blending system that combines traditional wuxia choreography with the mechanical complexity of a character-action game. Motion capture for the game’s fight animations was completed using real martial artists, with the goal of making the combat feel more like a Hong Kong action film than a Souls-like dodge-roll loop.
After a twelve-month period of exclusivity to the PS5, Phantom Blade Zero will become available on other platforms. Anyone looking forward to a 2026 release that defies the conventions of Western genres; and is likely to deliver something unlike anything else on this list; should keep a close eye on Phantom Blade Zero.
13. Pragmata; Capcom’s Long-Delayed Enigma Finally Surfaces

Developer & Publisher: Capcom | Release Date: April 17, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Steam)
Pragmata is the most enigmatic game on this list. It has been in development limbo for six years, and given how little Capcom has revealed, that mystique is unsurprising.
In June 2020, Capcom announced Pragmata. At the time, it was going to be released in 2022. It was later announced that it would be released in 2023. After that, Capcom simply disappeared. On June 4, 2025, during the State of Play, Pragmata returned to the public eye with a 2026 release date. During The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, Capcom announced that Pragmata would be released on April 24, 2026 (the date was moved up to April 17, 2026 at the Capcom Spotlight on March 5, 2026). Additionally, a playable demo called Pragmata: Sketchbook was released on Steam and consoles on the same day. The demo and the final version were released several months apart.
What is Pragmata? It is a third-person sci-fi action-adventure game. It is set in a lunar research facility. Players will control a man named Hugh, along with a young girl named Diana. Other than this information, Capcom has kept the details surrounding the game completely secret. The trailers for Pragmata showcase striking Unreal Engine 5 visuals. The trailers showcase scenes set in zero-gravity, sequences involving hacking mechanics, and cinematic moments that blend the horrors of Dead Space with the auteur approach of a Hideo Kojima production.
Honestly, Pragmata is either the most ambitious creative risk that Capcom has taken in the last ten years. Or it is the longest-delayed project in modern gaming to actually ship. We will know the answer to this in roughly one month. Pragmata is probably the most unpredictable entry on this list.
14. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis; 30 Years Later, Back to Where It Started

Developer: Crystal Dynamics & Flying Wild Hog | Publisher: Amazon Game Studios | Release Window: 2026 (specific date TBA) | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam)
Legacy of Atlantis was officially unveiled during The Game Awards in December 2025 as an attempt to reimagine the classic 1996Tomb Raider from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 and modernized controls, while expanding upon the storytelling, puzzles, and deadly traps that made Lara Croft a legendary figure in gaming. Amazon Game Studios will distribute the game through a new model of distribution for the franchise.
Although the official release date has yet to be formally announced, Crystal Dynamics has stated that the game will release in 2026. However, there have been some rumors that the game may release in the Fall of 2026 to minimize competition with the large number of Spring titles that are expected. Crystal Dynamics is also working on a new Tomb Raider title called Tomb Raider: Catalyst; which will be released in 2027. As such, 2026 is shaping up to be the most prolific year in terms of the Tomb Raider franchise in many years.
Whether Legacy of Atlantis can successfully combine the nostalgic value of the original with the expectations of modern players, or whether Amazon Game Studios’ involvement will introduce new distribution advantages or challenges, remains to be seen.
15. Control: Resonant; Remedy’s Connected Universe Expands

Developer & Publisher: Remedy Entertainment | Release Window: 2026 (Q2 estimated) | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), macOS
At The Game Awards in December 2025; Remedy Entertainment revealed Control: Resonant. Although it is set in the same time period as the first Control; players will take on the role of Jesse Faden‘s brother, Dylan Faden. According to Remedy; Jesse Faden will not be playable in Resonant.
Remedy has completely rebuilt the combat system. The telekinetic/gun loop from the first Control has been replaced with a shapeshifting weapon called the Aberrant. During an investor update in January 2026; Remedy mentioned a Q2 2026 release date for Resonant. However, in response to inquiries from the public; Remedy’s Communications Director stated that the only official information provided for the game was that it would be released in 2026.
Resonant expands upon Remedy’s connected story universe which links together Control and Alan Wake. (Quantum Break‘s connection to the shared universe remains unclear because of Microsoft’s ownership of the IP; although Remedy has hinted at the existence of connections to the shared universe; it has not officially confirmed it as part of the same continuity.)
On the publishing side, Remedy purchased the full rights to the Control franchise from505 Gamesin February 2024 for €17M. As a result; Resonant is being self-published by Remedy, allowing the studio to maintain full creative and financial control of the project’s future.
16. Subnautica 2; Beautiful Oceans, Ugly Courtroom Battle

Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment | Publisher: Krafton | Release Window: 2026 (Early Access, specific date TBA) | Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S (Day One on Xbox Game Pass)
A warning is necessary here.
The development of Subnautica 2 has been turbulent, to say the least.
The founding members of Unknown Worlds, including former CEO Ted Gill, were fired by parent company Krafton. As a direct result, a lawsuit was filed claiming that Krafton intentionally delayed the early-access launch of Subnautica 2 in order to avoid having to pay a $250 million earn-out bonus. In a shocking ruling made on March 16, 2026; only two days prior to the writing of this article; a judge in the Delaware Chancery Court has ordered Krafton to reinstate Gill, and granted the founders nine additional months to earn their bonus. Reporting on the matter came from Kotaku, PC Gamer, and Bloomberg.
The early-access launch of Subnautica 2 was moved from 2025 to 2026. A specific release date has yet to be announced.
Regardless of the chaos surrounding the lawsuit; the gameplay itself looks like everything fans of the original Subnautica wanted: a gorgeous, expansive, underwater survival experience with cooperative multiplayer for up to four players and cross-play compatibility. Will the chaos in the courtroom overshadow the release of the game? Or will the quality of the game speak for itself? This is one of the most unusual stories surrounding a new release in 2026.
17. Marathon; Bungie After Destiny

Developer: Bungie | Publisher: Bungie (under Sony Interactive Entertainment) | Released: March 5, 2026 | Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam) | Price: $39.99
At the time you read this, Marathon will have been available for nearly a month. Bungie’s extraction shooter released on March 5, 2026, at a price-point of $39.99 with full cross-platform play and cross-save capabilities. This marks the first time Bungie has created a new franchise since releasing Destiny in 2014. More importantly, it represents a major philosophical shift: no expansive open world; no lengthy campaign; just fast-paced multiplayer rounds through sci-fi environments where teams compete to extract loot and survive.
Early critical reception for Marathon has praised the game’s “world-class gunplay,” while simultaneously noting “some of the same flaws I’ve come to expect from Bungie,” according to IGN. User reviews of Marathon on Steam have been largely positive; however, professional critics have been more reserved.
The backstory matters here. Bungie’s journey to Marathon was tumultuous. Bungie was forced to undergo significant layoffs in 2024 and 2025 during Sony’s restructuring efforts. Furthermore, the game was delayed multiple times. At one point, there were legitimate concerns whether Marathon would ship in a polished state or reflect a strained studio. That Marathon shipped at all, let alone in a polished state, is an achievement in itself.
Marathon is not free-to-play; it is a premium priced game that utilizes a seasonal content model. Whether Bungie can maintain a viable player-base for Marathon through the remainder of the year, particularly after GTA VI releases in November, will be solely dependent on Bungie’s post-launch content strategy. While Bungie has a proven track record of supporting their live service models with Destiny, there are equal reasons for optimism and caution.
18. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach; Kojima’s Return Already Rewriting the Rules

Developer: Kojima Productions | Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment | Released: June 26, 2025 – Platforms: PS5 | Release Window – Platforms: PC (March 19, 2026)
Without question, any list of the most significant games of 2026 that fails to mention Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is incomplete. The PC release of Hideo Kojima‘s sequel to his polarizing 2019 debut arrives on March 19, 2026 (the PS5 version was released on June 26, 2025). The response to the game has been as intense and divisive as the reaction to the original.
Kojima Productions has produced a game that expands upon every aspect of what made the original appealing to its fans and confusing to its detractors. Strand-type gameplay returns with enhanced cooperative multiplayer, improved world simulation, and a narrative that defies simple description. Critical reception suggests that this is a more polished and more accessible experience than the original, but still firmly rooted in the author-driven style Kojima has maintained throughout his career.
Death Stranding 2 is notable for another structural reason: it is one of the biggest PS5 console exclusive titles of 2026. Alongside Marvel’s Wolverine and Phantom Blade Zero, it provides Sony with an incredibly strong first-party and exclusive slate for 2026. Regardless of whether you enjoy Kojima’s work or feel it is incomprehensible, the cultural impact is evident.
Honorable Mentions: More 2026 Releases Worth Keeping an Eye on
The 18 releases listed above do not represent the totality of what 2026 has to offer. There are other titles that are worthy of consideration.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra from Skydance Games was scheduled for an early 2026 release. Due to a “beyond early 2026” delay notice in November 2025, Marvel 1943 currently sits in limbo.
Skydance Games (official statement), November 6, 2025:
“To fully realize our vision for MARVEL 1943: Rise of Hydra, we’ve made the decision to shift our release window beyond early 2026.” — IGN, Nov 6, 2025
While Marvel 1943 still falls within the 2026 window; the vagueness of the delay notice and lack of a new release date create a great deal of uncertainty as to whether Marvel 1943 will actually be released in 2026. If it does; a World War II-themed action-adventure game featuring Captain America and Black Panther has the potential to become one of the year’s top-rated action games.
FromSoftware has generated significant anticipation for the standalone multiplayer spinoff of Elden Ring called Elden Ring: Nightreign. The question that everyone wants answered: will Nightreign be able to capture the feeling of exploring the world of Elden Ring as a cooperative multiplayer experience?
Slay the Spire 2 has entered early access and has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from the community. If you’re a fan of deck-building roguelike games, Slay the Spire 2 is arguably one of the year’s best and perhaps most rewarding experiences, even in its unfinished form.
Structural Advantages of 2026
Three aspects of 2026 separate it from the traditional annual hype cycle.
First, true next-gen development has finally arrived. Most of the titles listed above have been developed specifically for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. As a result, the concessions of the previous four years of cross-gen development; i.e., the need to develop games for both the aging PS4 and Xbox One hardware; are largely gone. Therefore, developers can create larger worlds, denser AI, more complex physics, and better graphics than ever before.
Second, many established franchises are being remade or reinvented rather than simply receiving incremental sequels. Fable is an absolute reboot. Gears of War is shifting to a prequel with a horror theme. James Bond is getting a narrative origin story unrelated to any film. Resident Evil introduced a dual perspective mechanic that changes the type of combat encounter by encounter. These are not safe, incremental sequels. Rather, they are big bets on the part of the developers, and regardless of whether they ultimately succeed; the fact that they took risks and attempted something bold; makes them far more interesting than the usual annual updates.
Third, the length of time spent developing the titles listed above suggests that the studios behind them are focused on delivering polished experiences rather than rushing to meet arbitrary deadlines. GTA VI has been in development for almost ten years. Fable has been in development since 2017-2018. 007 First Light is a labor of love that has been in development at IO Interactive for years. When studios spend this kind of time on a title, it generally indicates either a problematic development process or a genuine commitment to refinement. Based on early reviews of most of the titles listed above, the latter is likely true. Regardless, years of overpromising in the gaming industry have taught consumers to reserve judgment until they have experienced the games themselves.
Your Day 1 Plan
You cannot possibly play them all. Seriously.
Take a look at the calendar: Resident Evil: Requiem launched in late February and Death Stranding 2 arrives on PC in mid-March. Crimson Desert, Monster Hunter Stories 3, Marathon, and WWE 2K26 are all scheduled for release in March. Pragmata will drop in April. 007 First Light will follow in May. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will drop in August. Phantom Blade Zero and Marvel’s Wolverine will hit shelves in September. And GTA VI will dominate November.
If you are looking for a horror experience that features a deep narrative, Requiem has already provided that. If you want to get lost in an expansive open-world RPG; keep your eyes on Crimson Desert or Dawnwalker. If you are primarily interested in competitive multiplayer; then Marvel Tōkon needs to be on your radar from day one. If fast-paced action is what you are craving, Marvel’s Wolverine will not disappoint on that front. And if you simply want to witness the largest cultural phenomenon in gaming since…well, since GTA V; clear your November schedule.
One way or the other, these games will release whether you are ready for them or not. So, plan accordingly.
